I have always been a fan of Dries Van Noten’s provocative take on blurring the lines between genders through exaggerated looks.

For this collection I drew inspiration from several brands out there not shy to make a statement by using intricate silhouettes and bold colors. Brands like: Shimo Zhou, Walter Van Beirendonck and Margaux Derume all use juxtaposing materials in a harmonious way as they create pieces with a lot of character.

Construction + Execution

When making this bag, I wanted to create a piece that would challenge all your senses to evoke the feeling of being young again and playing with your favorite toys.

Some of the materials were challenging to work with, but after several trials and processes, I was able to make the prototype you see below. I had to use different thicknesses of fillers and facings to create the structured shape I wanted.

Attaching the toy soldiers was all done by hand stitching each one of them onto the flap of the backpack. I refrained myself from using glue because I wanted to sew them on in a way where you could still move them around and play with them.
