Bare

Accessory collection with a modern take on the utilitarian lifestyle, represented by the use of raw materials, contrasted by dark and bold tones for an urban feel.

Industry Trends

Year after year, we see major brands like Jill Sanders, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, among others, giving us iterations of the “clear bag”. I saw an opportunity with merging the clear PVC aspect with a geometric and unexpected way.

To add to the utility vibe, I wanted to use raw materials not usually used in bags, to help create the contrast between fashion and sporty day-to-day use.

The bungee cord has made a comeback and is now celebrated in the fashion world to allow any silhouette to have an urban vibe with a sleek pop of color.

Inspiration

This collection features a combination of primary colors representing our most bare and vulnerable emotional state. Contrasted with dark and natural tones representing everyday life. Through this juxtaposition, I was able to create a moody yet modern take on our raw emotions.

Construction and Execution

I made all three bags in this collection. I first started with making multiple rough paper mock-ups to get the dimensions right. Once I felt good with the sizing, I started working on my patterns based on my technical drawings. This part took the longest, as I had certain construction limitations while trying to use materials like bungee and wood.

After figuring out the best way to construct and make the bags I cut out all my pieces and started assembling them. This process included machine and hand stitching, edge painting, making and assembling the wood pieces, etc. When possible I would use hand tacks around the designs of all 3 bags to give it that tactile hand-made feel, to touch at the emotional aspect of my mood board.
